Hello! My name is John. I am a linguistics major from Davao City, Philippines. I decided to make this page as a form of a portfolio of some of my ideas and experiences for everyone to see.
You might notice the logo on the top left of the screen saying "Badj John" short for Badjao John. The reason for that is because my closest friends and I call ourselves Badjaos. The Badjaos are one of the native tribes in the Philippines who live around the coastal areas of the country whose lives and culture revolve around the sea. My friends and I are not members of any indigenous groups but we call ourselves Badjaos because the onset of our friendship was more about going on different adventures and spending a lot of our happiest times together in beaches which I will all share to you! |
I have a lot of concepts, ideas, and experiences that I could never share in other places apart from here. There will be info on what not to miss in the Philippines, how to get around the target language you are learning or want to learn, and lots of food and adventures. You will find out more as you go around the contents of this page.
A little about me
My enthusiasm for language has grown so much after I finished my bachelor’s study at the University of Southeastern Philippines. Since then, I have worked in different fields. I have been a sales executive for a Japanese manufacturing company, technical support for a call center company, an online English teacher for Japanese, Koreans and Chinese students using different platforms, and currently working as a freelancer doing various tasks I could get online. My skill set is very diverse. Because of that, I haven’t focused on a specific niche to build a career with a specific skill set. Some might call me as a generalist.
Having been equipped with linguistic concepts and theories, I am able to use what I learned in school in many of the things I do, especially in teaching. I have been teaching beginner students for so long that I have not honed some of my linguistic competence and instead I’ve focused more on my how to deliver my ideas verbally so I am easily understood despite language barriers with my students.
